The Oxford dictionary defines dementia as “chronic insanity.” During dementia, a person undergoes changes in memory, personality and behavior. All this happens due to change in functioning of the brain. Due to dementia, a person may not be able to interact properly in public or socially. These changes may happen due to other diseases like Alzheimer’s, Creutzfeld-Jakob, heart attacks, repeated blows on the head (like in the case of boxers) or due to alcohol addiction.

Dementia cannot be confused with delirium or mental diseases. While delirium is a disorder related to hallucinations, mental retardation is more to do with mental IQ. Dementia is more to do with absent-mindedness of a person, and has been referred to as senility. However, now dementia has been accepted as an abnormal aspect of ageing. Dementia can be recoverable in some cases, and irreversible in some cases. As it is a brain-related disease, it is also considered to be very sensitive.

Although not as dreaded as some other disorders, about 2 million people in the United States are infected by dementia, and some 5 million suffer from mild forms of cognitive impairment of the dementia type. It has been found that most of the older people in the US have more tendency of being infected by Dementia, especially those who may have stroke. It has also been found that women have more tendency to be infected by dementia, as they tend to live longer than men. After the age of 80, both men and women tend to have some from of dementia.
