If there is any disease for which millions of dollars are being spent on awareness, it is AIDS. A major threat in the developing countries, AIDS has already taken millions of lives the world over, besides many unrecorded deaths. In the US, nearly half a million have died due to AIDS, and worldwide over 25,000,000 have lost their lives. The African counties are worst affected by AIDS. The continent of Africa has over 30,000,000 people suffering from AIDS out of 42,000,000 world over. This is primarily due to lack of medicines and cure.

Biologically defined, AIDS is an immunological disorder which is caused due to HIV. This results in disorder of cell-mediated immune response. AIDS is a contaminated disease, often caused due to exposure to body fluids, blood and semen. A very small volume of blood is enough to get infected by AIDS. One can also be infected by unsterlized needle, which has been used to inject drug into an infected person. Infected needle was the major cause of AIDS infection in the United States for long. Globally, sexual transmission has been the major source of infection, primarily in the developing countries. It is also known that infected mothers can pass on the disease to their babies.

HIV plays a big role in destroying the immune system of the infected person. Due to defect in the immune system, the body becomes susceptible to diseases, and often succumbs to them. So, it is not the HIV which kills a person, but the weakening of the immune system. Even though much research and development has been done to find a drug for cure, there is no cure to it; only preventive measures can be taken. Some drugs, however have been invented to reduce the effect of HIV on the body. But unfortunately, most of the infected in the African countries still cannot either access or afford these drugs, and deaths continue to occur.

Many AIDS foundations are now formed to spread awareness. One of the most well-know foundations is Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, run by Microsoft chief Bill Gates, who has donated millions of dollars to keep AIDS in check in developing countries like India.
